Locals burn Uttarakhand resort after murdered girl’s body recovered | India News – Times of India

DEHRADUN: The body of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at a resort owned by Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP minister Vinod Arya, was recovered from the Chilla Barrage in Rishikesh Saturday morning by the state disaster response force. Angry locals soon gathered at the resort, which was demolished by the state government on Friday, and set its remnants on fire. Uttarakhand BJP has expelled Vinod and his other son Ankit from the party.
Pulkit and two of his associates have been accused of killing Ankita after she refused to comply with their alleged demands of indulging in prostitution at the property.
Pulkit and two of his associates were arrested and sent to judicial custody on Friday even as angry local residents beat them up in the presence of police, who could only watch helplessly.
The SDRF had started a search operation on Friday noon after Pulkit allegedly told police during interrogation that he had killed Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old who used to work as a receptionist at his resort, by pushing her into the barrage from a cliff on the night of September 18.
State DGP Ashok Kumar said, “SDRF’s deep-diving team finally managed to find Ankita’s body at around 7am on Saturday. Her family members were called for identification after the recovery. They confirmed that it was her.”
The body was then sent for a post-mortem examination by a panel of doctors at AIIMS-Rishikesh. After completion of the exam, it was handed over to Ankita’s family members, who then took it to Srinagar, where she would be cremated on Sunday morning.
Later in the day, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “An SIT under DIG (law & order) P Renuka Devi has been formed to probe the whole incident… (we will) ensure the strictest possible action against the accused involved in this heinous crime.”
Meanwhile, outraged locals not only set the resort ablaze but also attacked the car of Yamkeshwar BJP MLA Renu Bisht, who had gone to Rishikesh to meet Ankita’s family members on Saturday. Locals raised slogans against the legislator and surrounded her vehicle. A police team escorted MLA to a safe location amid the tension and the heckling.
As the rage escalated, Uttarakhand BJP on Saturday expelled Vinod Arya and his other son, Ankit Arya, from the party with immediate effect. In another major step, Dhami removed Ankit Arya from the post of vice-chairman of the other backward classes commission of the state.
This came even as five resorts in the Dhanachuli area of Nainital district were sealed after the CM ordered “all resorts and buildings constructed illegally on government or other lands” to be demolished. “I have directed all district magistrates to prepare a list of such properties operating illegally. We will bring them down. No one will be spared,” he said.
DGP Kumar said, “We will also act on any complaints of their staffers, especially females. A report will be submitted to CM within a week.”
In another significant move, assembly speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan appealed to the CM to end the system of revenue police in Uttarakhand, wherein civil officials of revenue department have powers and functions of police, and replace them with “regular” police teams. “Police stations and police outposts need to be set up,” she said.
